Colne 2-1 Prescot Cables
Saturday 14th October 2017
Brian Richardson was able to recall goalkeeper Marcus Burgess following suspension for the trip to
Colne and Tunde Olowabi was chosen to spearhead the attack following the recent departure of
Dominic Marie to Marine. Joe Herbert and Jordan Southworth were also restored to the starting line
up in place of Scarisbrick and the injured Turner in what amounted to four changes from the side
that had defeated Trafford in the FA Trophy 7 days earlier.
Cables started the match kicking up the significant slope and the hosts Colne made the most of the
first half advantage striking first on 20 minutes through Ollie Crankshaw who latched onto a long
ball, cut inside from his wide left position and drilled the ball low into the bottom corner leaving
Burgess no chance.
It was Crankshaw again who doubled Colne’s advantage shortly before the break, winning the ball
out wide, driving into the box and finishing from a tight angle, the winger was one of two debutants
in what was a much-changed Colne side having signed from Clitheroe earlier in the week.
It was a much-improved performance from Cables in the second half, aided by the hosts being
reduced to ten men on the hour mark, defender Jonathan Hodgkinson given his marching orders
after the referee had deemed that he had blocked a goal bound effort with his hand, Jordan Wynne’s
resulting penalty however was superbly saved by Colne keeper Hakan Burton who guessed correctly
diving to his left to push the effort away at full stretch.
Lloyd Dean was introduced to the action midway through the second half and was to have a
significant impact on events, in the 75th minute Deans flicked header halved the deficit following a
superb left wing cross from Valter Fernandes, and as Cables turned up the pressure on Colne
throughout the closing stages it Dean with his head who went closest again, meeting a right wing
free kick only to be denied by the post.
Roared on by a fantastic away support Cables continued to press but were unable to find an
equaliser and Colne held on for three points.
Prescot Cables return to action this Tuesday evening, 17th October, with a home game vs Bamber
Bridge in the League Cup and are once again at home next Saturday 21st October hosting Clitheroe.
