Clitheroe 1-3 Prescot Cables

Back to winning ways for Cables

A fantastic team performance from Cables as they overcame the disappointment of last weeks defeat to Colne, a first defeat in eleven, to take all three points from high flying Clitheroe who themselves had won nine of their previous ten fixtures in all competitions.

Much like the reverse fixture at Volair Pk earlier in the season the game was a very exciting end to end affair.

Cables had started much the stronger and deservedly took the lead on 12mins, Chris Almond keeping his excellent recent goal scoring run going, rising unchallenged in the six yard box to head home a corner.

The visitors continued to pepper the home goal and very nearly doubled the lead on 25mins, former Clitheroe forward Lloyd Dean drilling an effort of one post before seeing the ball drift agonisingly across goal and wide of the other post.

Just two minutes later and the first significant decision of the game, Reece McNally adjudged to have handled a right wing cross and the home side awarded a penalty, the decision seemed harsh, though it was felt that justice was done when Ben Barnes dived to his left to push away the spot kick from the league's top scorer Kurt Willoughby.

On 29 minutes the Cables defence was left frustrated once more, Alex Newby adjudged on-side and was able to finish with ease past the on rushing Barnes to the anger of the visiting players. Jordan Wynne collecting a yellow card for his protests after a lengthy talking too by the referee.

The lead was restored quickly however, on 35mins Josh Klein-Davies collected James Edgar's left wing cross, turned excellently in the box before seeing his goalbound effort deflect of a Clitheroe defender and loop up over goalkeeper Thompson and into the net.

Six minutes into the second period, and after chances at both ends since the interval, the killer goal was delivered, both Almond and Klein-Davies broke the offside trap and as Thompson, who had an excellent game, hesitated the latter was able to tee-up Almond to stroke the ball into an empty net for his second.

Within sixty seconds of the restart, confirmation that it was not to be Clitheroe's day was delivered, Willoughby's fine effort coming back off the crossbar before Newby's follow up drew an extraordinarily save from Barnes amid claims that the ball had crossed the line from some Clitheroe fans.

McNally became the second Cables player cautioned on 57mins after another very lengthy talking to from the referee, the reason for the caution was not immediately apparent but after a much shorter conversation with the match official post game we where able to ascertain that the Cables full back was cautioned for delaying the restart of play.

The blot on the copybook for Cables on the day was the loss of Edgar on 65mins, the winger taking a heavy fall and leaving the ground with his right arm strapped up, concern that he may have sustained a collarbone injury which will be assessed in the coming days.

As the game entered the latter stages Cables introduced Baba Conte from the bench for his first appearance since an extended Christmas break and Matt Hamilton made his debut after his recent signing from Marine replacing the excellent Klein-Davies up top.

In the closing stages Conte was subject to a lengthy conversation with the referee, and subsequently cautioned, for a rash challenge and the Cables goal once more led a charmed life with a double clearance off the line as the home side pressed. The Cables defence held firm as they away side secured a very satisfying victory.

Next up Prescot Cables host Glossop North End on Saturday 20th January before a trip to Scarborough Athletic the following weekend.
