Cables go top

Four goals in the opening half an hour from ex-blues forward Chris Almond set Prescot Cables on the way to another comprehensive victory away at Skelmersdale Utd, the New Years Day fixture played at Volair Park were the hosts are now tenants.

Almonds first, and probably the pick of his goals, came after just four minutes as he picked up the ball centrally around 30 yards from goal, dribbled his way past three opponents before a cool finish past United keeper Lee Roberts.

A second followed soon after as Almond was able to tap home at the far post from a James Edgar left wing cross, Almond completed his hat-trick on 16 minutes with a flick header from a free kick into the box, Edgar once more with the assist.

Cables continued to dominate the first half and after Jordan Wynne was denied what looked a certain penalty Almond stroked home his and his sides 4th just short of the half hour.

Cables had the ball in the net once more before the break, Edgar left frustrated by an offside flag.

Skelmersdale Utd came out with much more purpose in the second period, Hill had gone close with one effort before Alasdair Redmayne was very unlucky to see an effort strike the inside of the post and agonisingly away across the face of goal. Meanwhile Reece Fishwick and substitute Jordan Southworth had chances for Cables at the other end.

on 56 minutes Cables made it 5-0, Lloyd Dean with a free header at the far post after a succession of corners. Dan Burns was next to trouble the scoresheet on 84 minutes, the Cables winger firing home his first goal for the club after Wynne's excellent free kick had beaten Roberts and cannoned down off the crossbar.

Goal of the game however belonged to the hosts Skelmersdale Utd. Within a minute of Burns' maiden strike another Cables free kick into the box was cleared and United broke down the left, full back Jack Fleming making a lung bursting run from one box to the other to meet Molyneux's cross and finish acrobatically.

There was one final chance which fell to Burns who saw his effort clip the top of the crossbar and away, Cables completing their festive fixtures with three wins from three and an impressive fifteen goal haul in the process.

Victory, coupled with South Shields home defeat to Scarborough, took Prescot Cables to the top of the Evostik League North Division. Next up for Cables is a home fixture with Colne this coming Saturday, 6th January, followed by a trip to Clitheroe the following Saturday.
