Goole 1 - 4 Prescot Cables

Cables up to third!

Strong finishes to each of the halves saw Cables’ come out with a resounding victory on the road at lowly Goole AFC.

Another game, another goalkeeper so it seems for Cables’ this season. With Ben Barnes unfortunately injured on Friday it was a race against time again for Brian Richardson to source his fifth keeper of the season, that debutant was Ben Purdham whose move from Curzon Ashton was only ratified on the morning of the match, another change from the impressive victory over Scarborough Athletic was the preference of Dan Burn on the left in place of Harry Cain.

The game began slowly with neither side able to sustain any rhythm on what was a difficult pitch, though as the half progressed the pressure from Cables’ was building with the hosts looking to break quickly & often foiled by the offside trap. Neither keeper had been truly tested until in the 38th minute some good build up play involving Baba Conte led to the first real chance, comfortably converted by Lloyd Dean. Minutes later Dean was close to a second before Jordan Southworth converted a Dan Burn cross to make it 2-0, the half time whistle came at the right time for Goole.

After a slow start again to the second half, the hosts where suddenly reduced to ten men, right back George Gomersall already on a yellow card with a rash challenge on Burn and he was heading to the dressing room. The reduction to ten men appeared to galvanise Goole for a time and they halved the deficit on 73mins through an acrobatic effort from the edge of the box from Carl Stewart.

Two goals in the last five minutes, both from Jordan Wynne, completed the comprehensive victory, Wynne’s first came when he broke the offside trap and finished coolly when one-on-one, his second in the 90th minute a close range finish. Cables’ also had two strikes ruled out in the closing stages, one for offside and one for a foul which seemed particularly harsh.

The victory moved Prescot Cables up top 3rd in the league, 4pts behind leaders South Shields who visit Volair Park on Saturday 25th November, Cables’ will then be back on the road to Kendal Town on Saturday 2nd December.
